Stamps mourn death of Bud Riley

It is with sadness that the Calgary Stampeders learned of the passing of former coach Bud Riley, who passed away in Penticton, B.C., on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the age of 86.

Riley spent 12 seasons as a coach in the CFL, including one partial season as head coach of the Stampeders in 1985. Riley took over the head coaching duties of the Stampeders after the club started the 1985 season 0-5. Riley also spent three seasons as the Stampeders’ director of player personnel.

Riley, the father of current Oregon State Beavers football coach Mike Riley, was born and raised in Guin, Ala. He got his football coaching start at the high school level and moved on to the collegiate ranks in 1962 when he joined the staff at the University of Idaho. Riley was an assistant coach at Oregon State from 1965-72.

Riley moved on to the CFL in 1973 as defensive coordinator with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He coached in the CFL from 1973-79 and again from 1980-85, spending time with the Stampeders, Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos.

Riley was inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
