Mace: We stick together

I think what we learned most about last week’s game is that, as a team, we stick together.

I mean, there were a lot of things that went terrible for us and there were lot of self-inflicted wounds on our behalf but one thing you can’t take away from us is that we stick together as a team and we play with great effort regardless of the score. Fortunately, it turned out for us — unlike the week before, when the situation was flip-flopped. It was ugly, but we’ll take the “W” when we can get it.

I think for me, when Larry scored that touchdown, there was no doubt in our minds that it was definitely “Go” time.

Throughout the game, our leaders were keeping everybody on edge. We wanted to finish the game. Even when the score was bad, we wanted to finish the game with pride.

And things just played into our hands. There was Malik’s interception and . . . there were a lot of TSN turning points but when Larry scored that touchdown, you could definitely feel it in the crowd and throughout the team.

Coming out of those first four games, I feel like we’re a great team but we make a lot of mental errors. We shoot ourselves in the foot and that’s not acceptable, especially at this level. That’s something Huff preaches.

If teams are going to beat us, they have to beat us and not that we beat ourselves. So we’ve got to do a better job with that.

We’re 2-2 right now, we lost a couple of close games — and again, some of those were self-inflicted wounds. But when you have a win like last week, where it could have gone either way, at least we’re 2-2 and not 1-3 and we’re going into a game with BC. When you’re trying to be the champions and get to the top, you’ve got to beat the big dogs.

For us on the defensive line, it’s great to see that we’re starting to pick up some sacks. On the statsheet, that’s what you’re going to get recognized for as a defensive lineman.

But I think we’re doing a lot of good stuff like getting the quarterback off the ball and putting pressure on him. And also with the way Coach Campbell calls plays, some of those sacks that we had were schematically in our favour and when you get put in a situation to make a big play, our players made them.

We can’t finish last in the sack department like we did last year and I believe there are going to be a lot more sacks coming.
