The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that running back Jon Cornish has been honoured by the Canadian Football League for his play in the opening week of the 2012 season.
Cornish is the CFL’s Canadian player of the week after rushing for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the Stamps’ 38-10 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday. Cornish had 18 carries for 86 yards – an average of 4.8 yards per carry – with a long run of 20 yards. He also had three receptions for 28 yards.
Cornish’s first touchdown of the game came with 4:40 left in the first quarter when he ran the ball in from four yards.
He added his second major of the game with 8:15 left in the second quarter when he capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a three-yard run.
Cornish has now been named the CFL’s Canadian player of the week four times in the last eight games he’s played. Cornish won the award three times in 2011 – following Weeks 14 and 16 and after the Division semifinals of the 2011 playoffs.
