Glenn: It’s been a great camp

Camp so far has been pretty good.

I’ve been to enough training camps to know they aren’t meant to be fun, but this one has been great in terms of getting the guys acquainted and feeling comfortable with one another.

In previous camps, I got more used to the back-back two-a-days, so the beginning of camp was a little tough getting used to the early-morning practice and the evening practice. I pride myself on being a guy who can adapt and change with things, so I’ve enjoyed all the challenges this camp has presented.

Coach Huff did a lot of good things in camp — he go the most out of all the guys with the two-a-days. Like I said, I got a big surprise when we started training camp with the early practice and then the later practice, but I’m back in my groove. Other than that, this is my 12th camp so there really hasn’t been too much that has surprised me.

I’ve had an opportunity to play with some of the receivers and some of the offensive linemen so it’s made the transition very comfortable.

Coach Dave Dickenson has also made my move to Calgary very smooth. We have a great relationship — it’s wonderful to have a guy like that who has had so much success in this league. It’s great to have a mentor like him. You want do do nothing but listen to him and try to learn from him. I compare him to a guy like Khari Jones — both played in the league, both have a wealth of knowledge and both are more than willing to help you.

I love working with Dave because he doesn’t keep anything a secret. He’s always working with myself and the other quarterbacks trying to improve our game and make the game easier on us. Dave has the wonderful characteristic of being a fantastic teacher and I’m very lucky to be working with him this season.

He’s really good at understanding the player as a person and making sure communication is ongoing. It really helps build a relationship and with that, we have become good friends off the field.

I have really enjoyed working with all the other quarterbacks in this camp.  It really makes things a lot easier when all of us have so much in common in terms of how we see the field, how we approach plays and just similar characteristics of football. I think it’s been a good thing that we all so alike.

Drew and the rest of the quarterbacks have been very welcoming and I look forward to working with all of them this season.

Our first pre-season game went well. Personally, I felt like the game against Edmonton was a bit of a learning curve — I just tried to go out there, get accustomed to the new offense, try and execute as much as possible, call the plays and be able to react to the different defences. It’s still a work in progress, but we can only get better.

The team showed great toughness and competition in every spot and position on offense. We may have not put up a lot of points but all the guys were executing and, late in the game, we had guys come into the game and make some big plays.

We got the win, we have to build on it but I think it’s a good indication that we will be a very deep team this year.

Even after having been in the league for awhile, I’m motivated as ever. I still have a great love for the game — it’s just one of those things that you never want to give up. As a kid, I grew up wanting to play professional football and win a championship and I haven’t got one yet. That’s something that motivates me. I can’t wait to get into game action and get closer to our goal of winning a championship.

That means it’s very important for us to play well this week against Saskatchewan. It’s going to be a good opportunity to see what’s in store for the regular season. We have a lot of change on the roster this year but sometimes change is good.

Can’t wait for Friday!
