Smith: Knocking off the rust

The first practice of training camp is in the books. We’re out here and we’re knocking off a lot of rust.

You know, I’m very impressed with the amount of talent we have out here this year. A lot of guys who are eager to be back and we’re out there having a good time. We’re laughing and talking but we know that we’re here to work. We’re all working together and getting to know the young guys while the older guys are picking up where we left off.

New guys, old guys . . . it doesn’t matter. We’re all looking forward to the same goal. So everyone is cooperating and we’re willing to work together. With the veterans, we’re talking a lot and bouncing ideas off of each other. And we’re talking to Coach Rick Campbell and he lets us know what he’s looking for and we’re all willing to buy in.

We’re back with Tony Missick as the DB coach. This is his second year and he’s feeling more comfortable. We’re working together as a team and we’re growing together as a team.

We’ve got a good group of guys on the team who have been here for the long haul. We know the facility pretty well and we’ve been around for a long time, but we still feel young on the field when we’re out there.

We’re having fun with the young guys and we’re still young at heart. We just happen to have been here longer than them.

We’re able to pass along some of the experiences that we’ve been through. We’re not selfish out here. We’re all here to compete and may the best man win. If we’ve got to give pointers to a younger guy, we have no problem with that. This morning, Andre Clarke wanted to get better so he asked a question. That’s what I’m here for.
