Stamps sign four 2012 draft picks

The Calgary Stampeders have locked up four members of their 2012 draft class.

Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel has announced the signings of defensive back Keenan MacDougall, offensive lineman Mike Filer, defensive lineman Jordan Spence and linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza. As per club policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

All four players — along with the Stamps’ top draft pick in 2012, defensive lineman Ameet Pall — will be on the field when the team’s rookie camp opens on Thursday, May 31.

MacDougall was taken by the Stamps in the third round (15th overall) in the 2012 CFL Draft. He attended the University of Saskatchewan for four years but missed the entire 2011 season due to a partially torn quadriceps muscle. MacDougall played seven games for the Huskies in 2010 and recorded 35 tackles and two interceptions and also had one kickoff return for 57 yards and one punt return for 20 yards.

Filer was taken in the fifth round (31st overall) and attended Mount Allison University. He played in the 2011 East-West All-Star Bowl game and, in 2010, Filer was named an Atlantic University Sport all-star and CIS second-team All-Canadian. Filer was twice named the Mounties’ Lineman of the Year.

Spence, Calgary’s 43rd overall draft pick, played at Eastern Oregon in 2011 where as a defensive lineman he had had five tackles, including one tackle for a loss, for the Mountaineers. He was also named to the Frontier Conference All-Academic team in 2011.

DeSouza was selected in the sixth round (45th overall) and played at the University of Toronto. In 2011, DeSouza was an OUA first team all-star after recording 48.5 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two pass break-ups. In 2010, DeSouza led the CIS with 62 tackles.
