Back on Jan. 2, the day he was traded from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to the Calgary Stampeders, veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn did the usual round of media interviews and, naturally, was asked for his feelings about his new home.

Glenn did a fine job expressing his excitement about Calgary and the new challenge, but in such an emotional situation and the shock still in place, it can’t be easy to form thoughts, let alone express them.

Now that a few months have passed and Glenn has had more time to digest the entire matter, he’s as enthusiastic as ever about joining the Stampeders.

“I still feel the same way about it,” he said by phone from his off-season home in Detroit. “I’m probably a little more anxious than back then because (when the trade happened) the season had just ended. But now, once you get into that workout mode, the days go by and you start getting closer to camp, you really get more anxious to get out on the field and start playing with your new teammates.

“It’s hard to explain it but it’s like anytime you start a new job. I’ve been in the CFL for 12 years but this is like going to a new job and you’re anxious to get into work and show everybody what you still have.”

In the time that has elapsed since the deal, Glenn has been in contact with his new teammates by phone, email or via Twitter. In some cases — like Romby Bryant and Arjei Franklin from his Winnipeg days and Geoff Tisdale, Marquay McDaniel and Chris Bauman in Hamilton — new teammates were also old teammates.

“I’ve been in the league for a pretty long time,” Glenn remarked, “so I’ve had a chance to meet some guys and play with them on different teams and we’ve kept in contact.”

One of those old pals — Franklin — just happens to live across the Detroit River from Glenn in Windsor, Ont.

“It’s kind of cool that I’ve got a receiver here right across that I can work out with,” Glenn said with a chuckle.

Besides reuniting with former teammates, Glenn is looking forward to playing for a couple of members of the quarterbacking fraternity in head coach/general manager John Hufnagel and offensive coordinator Dave Dickenson.

“It’s a good situation,” said Glenn, who ranks 12th in CFL history with 32,488 passing yards. “I came into the league with a quarterback as my head coach (ex-Stamps pivot Danny Barrett was in Saskatchewan when Glenn started his career in 2001) and hopefully, if everything works out, I’ll leave the league with a quarterback as my head coach. The good thing is those guys have been where you’re at so they can tell you what they went through, what they experienced and how they dealt with it. I believe that any person who has experienced something has learned from it and has gained some insight from it.

“No disrespect to the other guys at all, but he communication level tends to be a little bit better when you’re working with a former quarterback.”

In addition to the awards and big-time stats he’s racked up on the field, Glenn brings to Calgary a reputation for being a solid citizen. As a matter of fact, he was the 2011 winner of the Tom Pate Award for his contributions to the community.

Even before setting foot in Calgary for the first time as an official member of the Stampeders, Glenn is working on continuing his tradition civic-mindedness.

 “I’ve been in contact with different people and hopefully we can get something going out there,” he said. “I’m all for the community. It’s one of those things that when you sign up to be a professional athlete or an entertainer or anything where you have little kids who look up to you, you also sign up for giving back to the community.

“I had a great time doing that in Hamilton and Winnipeg — and I did some stuff in Saskatchewan, too — and I want to keep it going.”

You can bet Tim Hortons, already a Stampeders community sponsor through the Timbits minor football program, will play a large role in his Calgary community work. Glenn owns a Tim Hortons franchise in his hometown and, last season in Hamilton, the Ticats had a Kevin Glenn bobblehead giveaway that had the quarterback’s likeness holding football in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.

“Tim Hortons is a great company to be involved with,” Glenn said. “The funny thing is that a lot of times, people will associate me with Tim Hortons before football even though I’ve obviously been involved with Tim Hortons a lot longer.”
