Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce the signings of non-import receiver Michael Squires and import receiver Markee White. As per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Squires, a native of Halifax, earned All-Canadian and Atlantic University Sport first-team all-star honours for Acadia in 2011 as he recorded 31 catches for 432 yards and a conference-leading seven touchdowns. In 2010, the 6-foot-4 Squires had eight catches for 141 yards and one touchdown in eight games for Acadia. He transferred to Acadia from Waterloo prior to the 2010 season after the Warriors football program was suspended from CIS competition. He had 16 catches for 216 yards for Waterloo in 2009. Squires started his university career with two seasons at Mount Allison.
White started his pro career by signing with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams in 2007 and attended training camp with the club. He signed with the Arena Football League’s Spokane Shock in 2009. White signed with the United Football League’s Hartford Colonials before re-signing with Spokane on Feb. 25, 2011. White signed with the Arena league’s Arizona Rattlers on Oct. 4, 2011. The 6-foot-7 White played two seasons at Texas State. Prior to that, White attended Long Beach City College and started his collegiate career at San Diego State as a basketball player.
