The Calgary Stampeders have pulled off a New Year’s blockbuster trade, sending quarterback Henry Burris to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. In exchange, the Stampeders receive import quarterback Kevin Glenn, non-import offensive lineman Mark Dewit and a conditional draft pick.

John Hufnagel, the Stampeders’ head coach and general manager, said the trade will benefit both clubs and is pleased with what Calgary received for Burris.

“Kevin Glenn has thrown for 5,000 yards in a season twice and he has proven to be one of the best quarterbacks in this league,” said Hufnagel. “It’s also exciting to bring Mark Dewit into the fold, a local kid who did an excellent job filling in at centre last season with Hamilton andwill start training camp competing at that position.”

Burris heads to Hamilton as Calgary’s all-time leader in every major passing category – touchdowns (203), yardage (32,191), attempts (3,677) and completions (2,267). Burris was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 2010 and won the Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy in 2008 and 2010 as the West Division nominee for MOP. He is a three-time West Division all-star, two-time CFLPA all-star and was named the Stampeders Presidents’ Ring Award winner in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Over 12 CFL seasons Burris has thrown for 41,235 yards, 257 touchdowns and 154 interceptions with the Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Burris’ highlight with the Stamps came in 2008 when he was named the Grey Cup most valuable player after leading Calgary to a 22-14 win over the Montreal Alouettes. It was the Stamps’ sixth all-time Grey Cup title.

“Many Stamps fans will always consider Henry a member of this football club and we want to thank him for nine great seasons with theStamps,” said Hufnagel. “Henry has done so much for the Stamps and he has also been a vital part of the Calgary community. We will miss him and wish him the very best in Hamilton.”

Glenn is entering his 12th season in the CFL, having played for Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Hamilton. He has thrown for 32,446 yards, 179 touchdowns and 128 interceptions. Glenn’s finest season came with the Ticats in 2010, when he threw for 5,102 yards and 33 touchdowns and had a quarterbackrating of 97.6. In 2007, Glenn was named the East Division’s nominee for Most Outstanding Player after throwing for 5,114 yards and 25 touchdowns with Winnipeg. He led the Blue Bombers to two playoff wins but couldn’t play in the Grey Cup due to injury.

“It’s a great feeling to be joining the Calgary Stampeders,” said Glenn. “I’m excited for a fresh start and want to continue the tradition of strong quarterbacks in Calgary. I look forward to working with Drew Tate and the entire Stamps offence.”

Dewit is going into his fifth CFL season. The Calgary native played high school football at Bishop Carroll. He won the Henry Philip Taylor Award as top student athlete.
