It’s all on the line in Week 19

With just one week to go in the 2011 regular season, the Calgary Stampeders could still finish first, second or third in the Canadian Football League’s West Division.

The Stamps conclude the regular schedule on Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium when they entertain the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It will also be Fan Appreciation Day at McMahon with the Jerseys Off Our Backs promotion and lots of great prizes to be given away.h2hWpg.jpg

The Calgary-Winnipeg contest is sandwiched between the games featuring the two teams — Edmonton and BC — that are tied with Calgary atop the West standings. The Eskimos play host to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night while the Lions will be at home to the Montreal Alouettes in Saturday’s late game.

A Calgary loss or wins by both Edmonton and BC would leave the Stamps in third place and on the road for the West semi-final. A Stamps win and losses by the Eskimos and Lions would give Calgary top spot and a first-round bye.

Finally, a Stamps “W” and a loss by just one of the other two contenders would mean second place for Calgary and a home date for the West semi.

As if that isn’t enough, the Alouettes and Bombers are engaged in their own battle for first place in the East and it could very well be that the last regular-season game of 2011 — the Montreal-BC clash — will decide top spot in both divisions.

Got all that?

OK, so it’s a little complicated, but it’s just the way things have been in this wild and woolly CFL campaign. After all, the three playoff clubs in the West as well as Montreal and Winnipeg in the East are all tied for the CFL’s best record at 10-7.

That means that this will be the first time since the league went to an 18-game schedule in 1986 that no team will win at least 12 games. In fact, even in the 16-game-season era, it hasn’t happened since 1982.

With Sunday’s win in Montreal, the Stamps are assured of finishing over .500 for a fourth consecutive season in the John Hufnagel era. Montreal is the only other team to finish above the break-even mark in every season since 2008.
