Insider: Masters of the rebound

Losses are as undesirable as they are unavoidable. At the pinnacle of any team sport, defeat is an unfortunate fact of life with the ultra-rare exceptions of the 1948 Calgary Stampeders or the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

The key to success is to avoid multiple losses in succession, to nip negativity in the bud and turn things around promptly and efficiently.Huff_110813.jpg

The Stampeders, for instance, have shown tremendous resiliency during the John Hufnagel era and they’ll try to display that quality again this week as they try to rebound from a 32-19 loss to the BC Lions in Week 12.

Since Hufnagel took over as coach in 2008, the Stamps have a remarkable 16-3-1 record the week following a loss. That includes a 6-1-1 mark in the week following a loss by double digits, such as the 13-point setback to the Lions last week.

The Stamps have just three two-game losing streaks since the start of the 2008 campaign and have never lost three straight games under Hufnagel. They’re the only CFL team over the past four seasons to avoid losing more than two games in a row.

Instances of multiple losses (two, three and four or more in a row) by CFL clubs since the start of the 2008 season:
