Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic this week will be returning to Moncton, New Brunswick, for the second year in a row. It is a weekend celebration of the Canadian Football League and its passionate fans from Atlantic Canada.
The Calgary Stampeders will be participating in this year’s celebrations which begin Thursday and feature activities and events for fans of all ages. Calgary Stampeders players and Outriders will be making their way throughout the region meeting fans, signing autographs, making hospital visits, promoting Tackle Hunger, cheering on football stars of the future, coaching young football players and meeting the league’s many supporters.
The Stampeders will have open practices both Thursday and Friday at the Rocky Stone Field in Moncton. On Saturday, they will be heading to Prince Edward Island for their walkthrough and a meet-and-greet with the public. Following that, they will be participating in a youth football camp.
The Calgary Stampeders will also be hosting Stamps House at the Old Triangle Pub on Main Street both Friday and Saturday. Admission is free and it’s a great chance to meet and chat with Stampeders players, alumni, cheerleaders and to purchase some Red and White merchandise or the newest Outriders calendar.
Touchdown Atlantic will feature more than the must-see CFL game. There are a number of great events and activities leading up to the big game, including a series of high school and university football matchups at the Rocky Stone Field at Centennial Park and Saturday’s Pigskin Soirée, which will feature local cuisine and entertainment. On Friday and Saturday, the Touchdown Downtown Street Festival will open up to the public along Main Street and will be highlighted by free nightly concerts in front of City Hall.
On Sunday, Sept. 25, the Calgary Stampeders will take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Moncton Stadium on the University of Moncton campus. The day will kick off early with two huge events at the Stadium – the Molson tailgate party and the Enbridge Family BBQ.
“We’re very excited that this year’s match-up has all the makings of a classic East-West shootout,” said Canadian Football League commissioner Mark Cohon. “The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Calgary Stampeders feature two of the most high-powered offences in our league and some of our most outstanding and exciting stars.”
“I’m looking forward to playing in Moncton considering all of the passionate Stampeders fans we have in Atlantic Canada,” said linebacker Akwasi Antwi, who played at New Brunswick’s Mount Allison University prior to joining the Stampeders. “I know they’ll be ready with their Game Faces on.”
Stamps head coach and general manager John Hufnagel and president and COO Lyle Bauer played as members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a pre-season contest in New Brunswick in 1985, the first time the CFL held a game there.
“The fans were unbelievable and we were really struck by their hospitality,” says Lyle Bauer. “Coach Hufnagel and I are looking forward to somewhat of a homecoming in New Brunswick. We can’t wait to renew old friendships.”
Look out Moncton – here comes the Red and White. Get your Game Faces ready!
