Early on on Friday night, when we were settling for field goals, it could have gotten frustrating but we kept at it.
Edmonton made some plays and I missed a couple of throws, and we knew all along it was going to be a hard-fought game. Both defences were doing a great job of keeping the offences out of the end-zone.
But we kept fighting through it. What we learned on Labour Day is how important it is to keep fighting through adversity. That makes us a better team in the long run.
As for the Hail Mary play just before halftime, it was very critical for us to get that play. When I threw the ball, I got twisted up and then I got blown up by one of their guys so I really didn’t get to see what happened.
It’s one of those things that when you throw it, you just wait for the crowd’s reaction and when I looked to the sideline, I saw our guys running on the field. And I saw Huff running up the sideline doing his fist pump. To see our guys going crazy and enjoying the moment, that’s what this game is all about.
That really gave us a big swing going into the half. We had the lead but to get that huge momentum swing and an even bigger lead, that’s what it’s all about. We put the ball in our playmakers’ hands and allowed them to make plays for us.
The Eskimos challenged me to use my feet and I know I didn’t do a good job of that on Labour Day. They gave me the running lane on that play in the fourth quarter. They over-pursued on the bootleg and when I cut it back, the o-line did a great job of staying on their guys.
I saw all this green pasture in the end-zone and I was like, “Hey, no matter how long it takes, I’m going to whatever I can to get it in there” and I was able to.
It was huge getting the running game going on Friday. We were patient and we knew it would come. People have been saying to get it to those guys and you know, the guys up front have been battling their butts off and we knew the running game would come. The o-line did a great job and to see No. 9 and No. 21 pounding the ball like that, that’s when our team is at its best. I was very happy to see it.
We’re 5-0 on the road now and that’s huge. It just seems like when we go on the road, we’re loose. We have a no-holds-barred attitude and when we’re on the road, it’s us against the world. We bond together tighter on the road. Now we just have to apply that same formula at home.
