It’s game day.
It’s an afternoon game, so the preparation is a little bit different. When it’s a night game, you sleep in as late as you want. But with the early start, you have to get up a little earlier, have something small to eat and then just go through notes quickly, but not too intensively because you’re trying to keep your mind fresh.
From there, you have your main meal at about 11, head to the stadium for 12 and that’s about it. Then you just get ready to play.
A lot of players eat the same thing every time for their pre-game meal but I like to switch it up. It depends where we are. Usually, it’s breakfast food for me – eggs, potatoes, chicken. When I’m here in town, I like to go to Red’s Diner and get the big breakfast – that’s my go-to.
I like the early games. Honestly, when we have a night-time game, I spend the whole day just sitting around and just getting more fired up and ready to play. It just seems like it’s never going to come. With the afternoon game, you still get the anticipation but you’re able to get out there and start playing right away.
It was a good week this week coming off the bye. It felt a little longer because we had a couple of extra days just to get back in the groove of things. Honestly, the body feels 100 per cent better from the seven days off. It’s amazing what that’ll do for you. And it’s been a good week of practice. I think we picked up right where we left off and everybody’s looking sharp and ready to go.
Every team you face is a new challenge. Every team does different things on defence. They have different tendencies and even from a one-on-one standpoint, every player has his own arsenal of tools he likes to use, especially in pass protection. Every week changes big time in terms of how you’re going to play and what you’re expecting to see.
As far as our o-line is concerned, there have been a lot of questions asked going into the past two seasons because of some of the new faces that we’ve had but we’ve come together. The lineup has been different week in and week out, but we’ve really settled down the last few weeks and the young American guys are stepping up and doing real well.
Now Edwin is recovering and it’s just a matter of time until we get him back. Overall, I feel like we’re really coming together as a unit. Our coach Kris Sweet really focuses on the foundational stuff and a lot of technique basics. He also does a whole lot of preparation during the week to prepare for that specific opponent, to make sure you’re ready for what you’re going to see on the field that week.
