Phillips: Montreal is a big test

We have tremendous respect for Montreal and with what they’ve accomplished over the past few years. They’re a polished team, a veteran team and we know what we’re in for, so we have to prepare like we’re playing the Grey Cup champs that they are.

Anthony Calvillo is probably one of the smartest quarterbacks in the league. He knows his reads and he gets the ball out extremely fast, which always makes it a challenge for a defensive lineman to get to him. Outside the pocket, maybe he can’t move that well but inside the pocket, he’s a little bit sneaky and elusive in there. He’s a veteran guy and he’s a little bit tricky to get down but hopefully we can get some heat on him this week.Phillips_110607.jpg

Anytime you’re playing the two-time defending Grey Cup champions, it’s a test and you want to go out there and show them you’re right up there with them. The Alouettes are strong this year, like usual. It’s not so much a measuring-stick game but we want to go out there and compete with the team that has been the best.

Defensively, I feel we started the season pretty strong. In the last game against Saskatchewan, they moved the ball on us a little bit, especially late in the game when we were back in coverage. But overall, I think our defence has been pretty polished. The new guys who have stepped in have done a great job. I’m happy with the way the defence has been playing and hopefully we continue to progress throughout the season.

I’ve really been enjoying the added responsibility and playing time on defence this season. It’s what I’ve been waiting for for four years, so it’s definitely refreshing. I feel like I’ve had a pretty good start to the year.

Assignment-wise, I’ve pretty much been sound every game with no mental errors and I’ve gotten a few hits on the quarterback, a sack and some tackles. Yeah, it feels great. It feels like you’re playing football again. Of course, special teams is also football but when you grew up playing defence your whole life, you’re having fun out there when you’re playing on D.

I’m looking forward to Saturday’s game. It should be great weather and it should be a great atmosphere here. I can’t wait.
