It was a little more than a year ago that I arrived in Calgary and I’ve been asked about what I recall about first arriving here.
Well, I do remember that it was rainy and cold. I also remember how everything was so different because the defence was a yard off the ball and I was just trying to quickly adjust to things before the second pre-season game was coming up. Edwin Harrison had just gotten hurt and I had to jump in and play that pre-season game. I was just trying to learn everything as fast as I could.
It was a great learning experience for me. As I got more into it, I got more comfortable with what I was doing. Then the time on the practice roster helped me even more to excel and get better. When I got the chance at the end of the season, I knew what I was doing.
It obviously also helped carrying over into this year because you already know the system from last year. Going through camp and the first couple of games, I felt very comfortable.
With some veterans missing from the offensive line to start this season, we had a young unit. We had J’Micheal Deane and a few other young guys coming in to learn the system but I knew once we went through the pre-season and got a couple of games under our belts, we’d be fine. And that’s exactly what happened.
An offensive line is always a tight unit and each and every week we get closer and closer. There’s more joking around, there’s more sticking around together outside of football. There are no individuals in an o-line, it’s all of us together. It starts with us — we are the foundation.
There’s been some build-up for Saturday’s game against Edmonton, but you have to approach like usual. Like they say, you take it one game at a time. This is a good opportunity to move into first place in our division so we’re just going to go out there and do what we do.
