Newcomers join club Tuesday

The Calgary Stampeders had a couple of new faces on the field at McMahon Stadium on Tuesday morning.

Wearing No. 88 is speedy receiver/return man Steven Turner, a Bishop’s Gaiters alumnus who was a 2010 draft pick of the Toronto Argonauts. Along with being the cousin of rookie Stamps defensive lineman Junior Turner, one of the more interesting biographical tidbits about Steven Turner is that his nickname is “Afterburner.” That’s only fitting for a young man who established a record in the 40-yard dash at the 2010 CFL evaluation camp.Green_110719.jpg

Turner has been added to Calgary’s roster.

The other newcomer is No. 42 — fullback Lyle Green, who joins the active roster. While the Kitchener, Ont., native is new to the Red and White, he’s no stranger to the CFL after having spent nine seasons with the BC Lions.

“It’s definitely weird putting on another uniform after all those years in BC,” Green admitted on Tuesday after his first practice with the Stamps. “I’ve never put on any other uniform in my career since college so it’s definitely weird but I’m here now and happy to be here.”

Green’s most productive seasons with the Lions coincided with the time Dave Dickenson was the BC quarterback. Dickenson, of course, is not the Stamps’ offensive coordinator.

“Dave and I definitely have a relationship from the years in BC,” said Green. “He was a great player and he’s obviously doing a great job here coaching. Hopefully I can fill in and do some things to help the team win. I’m grateful for another opportunity to play football.”

With Rob Cote sidelined, Green is getting a crash course on the Stampeders system and is earning praise from head coach and general manager John Hufnagel for being a quick study.

“It’s very important,” said Hufnagel, “especially with what we do with the fullback position. He has a lot of responsibility. Also, there are the demands that we have for him as a special-teams player and Lyle fits that bill very well.”
