Raymond: We have to bring our “A” game

Winnipeg’s a very good team. I’ll tell you that. They’ve gotten off to a great start on the season and that’s exactly where you want to be at the start of the season — to put yourself in a good position.

They’re dynamic, so we definitely have to bring our “A” game.

When you lose as many close games as they did last year, it’s just minor things that you need to tweak and be able to close out games. We know that from experience and our first game because we should be 2-0. If they can turn just half of those close losses around, they’re a playoff-contending team.Raymond_100930.jpg

They were a pretty good team last year, they just didn’t know how to finish. It looks like they’ve turned that around this year.

Their quarterback, Buck Pierce, is one of those players you like to watch. He’s a physical quarterback and he’s going to run around and he’s going to sling the ball. And those receivers? He’s got Terrence Edwards who’s got great hands and was one of the top leaders in the league in receiving last year with yards and touchdowns. Buck Pierce definitely has some assets on his team.

We just have to buckle down and play football.

As a defence, we have to carry over the enthusiasm that we showed last week in Vancouver. We have to make sure we’re flying around to the ball and not giving an inch. That’s the biggest thing we want to carry over from our last game. We have to make sure we stay hungry every series and every play no matter what happens.

In the last game, I managed to get an interception but I should have had another one. My wife told me, “You’re going to be mad once you see the replay.” So I got home and watched it on TV — I thought I only got one hand on it, but it hit two and I’m definitely devastated. I should have had two! I’d be leading the league right now. But I will make up for it.

One guy who does have two interceptions is my teammate Geoff Tisdale. He’s new to the team and he’s fit into the mold great, man. He’s making plays and he’s a good cover guy. So many people were worried about our all-star corners leaving but Geoff is an awesome player. He’s physical, he’s learned the defence and he’s pretty fast, too. He fits in well with this scheme of defence.

Romans 12:2 — Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
