Paredes honoured by CFL

The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that non-import kicker Rene Paredes has been named the Canadian Football League’s special teams player of the week for Week 2.ParedesI_110712.jpg

Paredes, playing in his first career CFL game, booted a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the Stampeders’ 34-32 victory over the host BC Lions on July 8. It was the first field goal of at least 50 yards by a Stampeders kicker since the 2006 season.

He also became just the third player in CFL history to connect on a field goal of at least 50 yards on his first attempt in his first game. Bernie Ruoff of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (who kicked a 58-yarder in on Aug. 12, 1975, on his first CFL field-goal try) and Carlos Huerta of the Las Vegas Posse (a 54-yarder on July 8, 1994) are the others.

Paredes later kicked another field goal and had four converts, giving him 10 points on the night. Paredes also made a special teams tackle and averaged 57.8 yards on six kickoffs.

The Stampeders received player-of-the-week recognition on eight occasions in 2010.

Paredes is the first Stamps player to receive the honour in 2011.
