Presidents’ Ring winner to be roasted

Rob Lazeo will join an esteemed list of athletes on May 11 when he is honoured at the annual Calgary Stampeders President’s Luncheon, presented by Global Calgary.

Lazeo retired last season after 14 seasons as an offensive lineman in the CFL, the last four of which were spent with the Stampeders.Lazeo_091106.jpg

Lazeo will become the 28th player to win the Presidents’ Ring at the event, which this year will be held at Flames Central (219 8th Ave. SW) from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Stampeders fans are invited to the President’s Luncheon for an opportunity to meet past winners, speak with current players and help honour Lazeo. Part of the President’s Luncheon tradition is the recipient roast, a session where players will take good-natured shots at Lazeo.

Tickets for the President’s Luncheon are $75. The cost includes admission and a meal. A group rate – comprising eight tickets – is also available for $560.

The Presidents’ Ring has been presented annually since 1967 to the Stampeders player who best demonstrates excellence on and off the field. Lazeo’s teammates selected him based on his in-game contributions, leadership, inspiration and motivational skills. During his time as a Stampeder, Lazeo was a regular contributor to the community.

Lazeo played in 202 regular season games and 15 post-season games. Lazeo helped the Stamps win the 2008 Grey Cup. He was a West Division all-star that season and was Calgary’s 2008 nominee for the CFL’s top offensive lineman award.

Lazeo was part of the offensive line that helped Joffrey Reynolds win consecutive CFL rushing titles in 2008 and 2009.
