Maver: A rookie season to build on

My rookie season was a learning experience right from the start — having to compete for a job was something I hadn’t had to do since my freshman year in college.

I started off well, hit a road bump and worked my way through it. It was not a great season, but it was definitely something to build off of. I know what I have to improve on, and having the off-season to work on my game after experiencing my first Stampeder season will make it that much more productive. I received tons of great advice from many knowledgable people, but nothing can actually prepare you for a season like experiencing your own. MaverI_110407.jpg

I am proud and fortunate to have been a part of this team in 2010. Playing in the West final with this team was incredible. This is the most special group of guys I’ve ever played with.

The individual accolades such as winning the CFL scoring title doesn’t mean much to me. When you get the chance to kick 70 converts and to attempt 47 field goals, the points are going to come. Our offence, defence and special teams continually put me in position to kick points.

Like I said, this off-season has been so valuable. One area in particular, Coach Monson has helped me get into the best shape I’ve been in. Up until now, as silly as it sounds, I neglected the importance of proper nutrition and sleep. Coach has done a great job both teaching me and monitoring my eating and sleeping habits.

I’ve always been somebody who works hard in the gym, but when you’re putting the right things in your body with proper sleep it makes all the difference in the world.

I’ve also started to work with a new kicking coach and trainer. I’ve been working really hard and so far the results have been very encouraging. All signs are pointing to a much improved second season. I can’t wait to contribute more on the field this year and help this team win as many games as possible!

The rest of the team aside, I’m really looking forward to seeing Burke, Chevy and Arjei again every day. We’re a really tight-knit group and their advice and mentorship was great last year. They also happen to be some of the funniest guys I know. Working with Coach Kilam and this specialist group is awesome.

I just want to remind fans that they can follow me on Twitter at @rmaver6

Twitter is a way to interact with the fans, and other guys on the team. We have great fans here in Calgary. Twitter is a great way to spread messages and news that are important, and for those of you who follow me already, my opinion on certain reality TV shows… I think it’s important for the fans to know the players off the football field also, it’s cool. I’m having a lot of fun with Twitter and I appreciate all my followers!

See you all at McMahon,
