Insider: Stamps’ alma maters go bowling

No fewer than 23 current Stampeders players will see their alma maters participate in the U.S. college football bowl season, which begins on Saturday, Dec. 18.

Three of the plethora of bowl games will feature a head-to-head matchup of schools that produced a Stampeder including the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day, which pits Juwan Simpson’s Alabama Crimson Tide against Mike Labinjo’s Michigan State Spartans.bowl_graphic.jpg

The St. Petersburg Bowl on Dec. 21 involves a battle of schools that produced three members of the Stampeders defence — Southern Miss, the college defensive lineman Tom Johnson attended, and Louisville, the team for which linebacker Malik Jackson and defensive linemen Robert McCune.

The other game that features one Stamp player’s former school against a teammate’s alma mater are the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl between P.K. Sam’s Florida State Seminoles and Brandon Isaac’s South Carolina Gamecocks.

Also of note is that quarterback Daryll Clark and practice-roster offensive lineman Gerald Cadogan, not to mention head coach and general manager John Hufnagel, are all alumni of the Penn State Nittany Lions, who will play the Florida Gators in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1.
