Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that import defensive back Brandon Smith has re-signed with the club. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Brandon is very quietly one of the most productive players on our defence,” said Hufnagel. “He worked hard to come back from a knee injury that he suffered in 2009 and had a great year in 2010.”
Smith, who joined the Stampeders in 2008, started 17 regular-season games at halfback in 2010 as well as the Western Final. He recorded 43 tackles and four interceptions, which placed him one pick behind the team lead. During the Labour Day Classic win over the Edmonton Eskimos, Smith returned an interception 58 yards for his first career touchdown. The 26-year-old Oakland, Calif., native added two pass knockdowns.
“I’m really glad to be coming back to Calgary,” said Smith. “I’ve enjoyed starting my career here. We have great fans and the people in the city have always treated me well. We have a great group in this organization — players, coaches and support staff — and I look forward to an even better season in 2011.”
A product of Sacramento State, Smith has been with the Stampeders for three seasons. He recorded 56 tackles and added two sacks in 2008, his first with Calgary. He also added two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and five special-teams tackles. Smith missed the entire 2009 season after suffering a knee injury in training camp.
