Even though it’s a big game at the end of it, it’s a normal week of preparation. You’ve got to treat it like a normal week and just another game.
At the same time, it’s a new season. This is the big season right here. This is what everybody came to camp for, this is what everybody prepared for. But the way you prepare for the game is no different.
You’re doing the same things you would do during the regular season. You’re breaking the teams down, you’re breaking down coverages and leveraging the guy that you’re covering.
There were a few little wrinkles here and there that Saskatchewan put in for the Western Semi-Final game. But for the most part, teams don’t really do too many changes with their playbook at this time of the year. Like I said, they might a wrinkle or two just to try to throw you off as a defence, but you’re not going to be able to do too much.
A lot of people have been asking about the weather this week. Oh, it’s cold, there’s no denying it. But at the end of the day, when you get out there, you’re going to get an adrenaline rush and that’s going to take over. So it’s going to be all right. I feel the mentally strong guys are the ones who are going to be able to win this game.
Besides, it’s not like it’s going to be any warmer for them. Everybody is going to be cold. It’s just how you go about it and how strong you are mentally. That’s what’s going to help you through this game.
The last time the West final was played at McMahon Stadium, we beat BC. What I remember most is that last-second bomb that the Lions threw up and Geroy Simon tried to go up and get it. But we knocked it down in the end-zone and once we did that, we won.
I remember that clear as day because I was one of the guys who was up there jumping. If he had caught, maybe we would have never had a ring. But the way things turned out, yeah, that was a good memory, seeing the zero-zero on the clock and knowing that you were going to the Grey Cup.
It was a great feeling, man. It was great to get up on the stage with your teammates and get that division trophy. We were able to say we were the best team in the West and that’s what we’re trying to get to again this year. When it says zero-zero on Sunday, we want to be the ones up on the podium holding that West trophy.
