Insider: Stamps-Riders final history

History will be made on Sunday when the Calgary Stampeders take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders to battle for the right to represent the West Division in the 98th Grey Cup at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 28.

The Stamps and Roughriders have been rivals for more than six decades, but Sunday’s contest at McMahon Stadium marks the first time the clubs will play a single-game West final on Calgary turf.Cal_Sask.jpg

Calgary and Saskatchewan went 38 years between West final meetings at any venue before facing each other in last year’s division championship contest at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium. Before that, the rivals had last met in 1971 when the Western final was a best-of-three affair.

Although the Roughriders won last year’s game, the Stamps continue to hold a 5-3 lead over Saskatchewan in the all-time West final series.

Including the best-of-three series — the Stamps and Roughriders met five straight times in the West final between 1967 and 1971 — and a pair of two-game, total-point matchups in the 1940s, Calgary and Saskatchewan have played a total of 17 games. The Stamps sport a 9-7-1 record in those contests, including a 4-4 mark in games played in Calgary.

Here’s a recap of previous matchups:

2009

Third-quarter touchdown catches by Andy Fantuz and Rob Bagg put the Roughriders ahead to stay as Saskatchewan earned a 27-17 win. Assisted by interceptions from James Patrick and Eddie Davis, the Riders defence contained the Calgary offence in the second half until a late touchdown catch by Jeremaine Copeland. The teams were tied 10-10 at the half as the Stampeders took a 10-point lead and the Roughriders replied to pull even before the midway break.

1971

Jerry Keeling tossed two touchdown passes in each game as Calgary swept past Saskatchewan in the West Final en route to the 1971 Grey Cup title. A pair of Stamps — Hugh McKinnis and Jesse Mims — each rushed for 103 yards in the second game while Rudy Linterman had three catches for 104 yards and a major.

1970

Larry Robinson’s game-winning field goal as time expired lifted the Stamps to victory in the deciding game of a series in which the visiting team won all three matches. Jerry Keeling threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the opener while Jim Silye ran back a punt for 63 yards and a touchdown in the clincher.keeling_100809.jpg

1969

George Reed amassed 318 yards from scrimmage — 159 rushing and 159 receiving — to help Saskatchewan sweep the series. The Riders’ Ron Lancaster threw for 261 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the second game while Calgary’s Jerry Keeling (pictured right) threw for 408 yards in a losing cause in the opener.

1968

Terry Evanshen scored a touchdown in both games as the Stamps swept the series. Calgary’s Dave Cranmer rushed for 96 yards and a major in the first game while Bob McCarthy had seven catches for 103 yards in the second contest. Stamps quarterback Peter Liske threw for a total of 392 yards and three touchdowns in the series.

1967

The Roughriders rallied with a pair of wins after dropping the opener of a very close series in which no game was decided by more than four points. Terry Evanshen and Lovell Coleman each scored two touchdowns for Calgary in the series while Jim Carphin and Gord Barwell found the end-zone for Saskatchewan in the clinching win.

1949

Rod Pantages scored a pair of touchdowns and Sugarfoot Anderson added one as the Stamps won the series-opener at Regina’s Taylor Field. The Riders won the return match in Calgary but Saskatchewan missed a fourth-quarter field goal and failed to overcome the points deficit.

1948

Keith Spaith and Paul Rowe scored touchdowns in the Stampeders’ series-clinching victory at Calgary’s Mewata Stadium. The 4-4 tie in the opener at Regina was the only blemish of any kind in an otherwise perfect season for the Stampeders en route to their first Grey Cup title.
