Today is Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans Day in the U.S.
This is the day we remember the people who fought for us and those who laid down their lives so that we could all lead better lives. I appreciate what they did, especially having served in the military myself.
I know how hard it is being in a foreign country, especially during holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving when you couldn’t be with your family. I just want to thank the people who are serving right now and ask them to continue to do a good job.
In football, we often use expressions like “battling” and “going to war.” I’m not too sensitive about it because I’m pretty sure the players know that going to war on a football field and going to war for real are not the same. It’s a game and I knew the guys just talk that way to get themselves going and that they don’t mean to disrespect the people who are battling for real.
My military experience was like anything else. It had its ups and downs.
One bad time was when I was in Korea when we had the monsoon season and the water got up to 10 or 12 feet and a lot of people drowned. A lot of Koreans lost their houses and all their food and we helped them get back up on their feet.
But overall, through all the ups and downs, it was a positive experience. I learned a lot and I met a lot of great people of different nationalities. It was good for me.
