The Canadian Football League’s rushing leader was a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Representatives of the Saskatchewan Roughriders topped the charts in passing yards and receiving yards.
The highest a Calgary Stampeder appeared in any of the league’s big three offensive categories is third place. And yet, the 2010 edition of the Red and White was the CFL’s most productive in the past 13 seasons.
How’d they do it? Depth. While Nik Lewis was the only Stamps receiver to crack the top five in receiving yards — as a matter fact, he was in fifth place with 1,262 yards — Calgary is the only club with three pass-catchers in the top 10 thanks to the contributions of fellow 1,000-yard men Ken-Yon Rambo and Romby Bryant.
The Stamps also led the CFL with 11 different players making touchdown catches.
On the ground, Joffrey Reynolds’ run of CFL rushing titles ended at two years — he finished a respectable third in 2010 — but the one-two punch of Reynolds and Jon Cornish combined for 1,818 yards, the best total of any running back tandem in the league.
Throw in the work of backup quarterback Drew Tate, whose quarterback rating this season was the highest of any league signal-caller with at least 20 throws, not to mention the quietly efficient labour by the offensive line, and you get the idea that the Stamps’ big point total was a true team effort.
While we’re at it, let’s not forget the defence, which did its share by scoring seven combined touchdowns on interception and fumble returns and by limiting the opposing attack’s time on the field.
Then there are the foot solidiers — rookie kicker Rob Maver was the CFL scoring champion in 2010 with 185 points while Burke Dales led the league in punting average, which gave Calgary an edge in the field-position battle.
The Stamps are the first West Division team since 2000 to score 600 points in a season and their total of 626 points was the highest since Toronto rang up 660 points in 1997.
Calgary has accounted for three of the four highest point totals in the past 13 seasons.
