Stamps end regular season with win

The Calgary Stampeders wrapped up the 2010 regular season with a 35-32 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night at Canad Inns Stadium.

The victory gives the first-place Stamps a 13-5 record, the same mark they posted in 2008 during John Hufnagel’s first season as Calgary’s head coach-general manager.Stamps_101105.jpg

“This gives some confidence to the football team,” said Hufnagel after the final gun. “I like that it was a close game and that we were able top prevail at the end, that we made some plays to win the game.”

The Red and White will now be idle until Nov. 21 when they’ll host the Western Final at McMahon Stadium.

The Stampeders scored on their first possession, with the drive capped by Henry Burris’ 30-yard touchdown pass to Romby Bryant. The score was Bryant’s 15th of the season and his fourth in the past two games.

Burris played just one more series before giving way to Drew Tate.

“I thought Dew Tate did an excellent job managing the game,” said Hufnagel.

Tate got the Stamps into the end-zone before the end of the first period as he found Randy Chevrier — who was in as part of the Stamps’ short-yardage package — for a one-yard touchdown pass.

The Blue Bombers’ offence consisted of three Justin Palardy field goals until Joey Elliott found Cory Watson for a 55-yard touchdown pass.

After a touchdown-free third quarter, the Stamps got back into the end-zone in the fourth period as Tate connected with Ken-Yon Rambo on a 39-yard strike.

Terence Jeffers-Harris got that one back for the Bombers as he was on the receiving end of a 27-yard Elliott touchdown pass.

With four field goals, three extra points and a kickoff single, Rob Maver established a Stampeders’ rookie record for points in a season, surpassing Sandro DeAngelis’ previous mark of 179.
