Lysack: Pepsi Refresh Challenge begins

The Pepsi Refresh Project is giving away more than $1 million to support Canadian ideas that will promote positive change in the community and that includes $50,000 as part of the CFL challenge.

A player representing each CFL team will present his idea and starting today, fans can vote at www.cfl.ca/PepsiRefresh to decide who will get the grant.Lysack_100707.jpg

You can vote several times a day until Nov. 24, so please keep coming back to support my cause!

My program involves the Canadian Cancer Society in Alberta. The Society has Cancer Care kits, which is essentially everything you need to know when you’re going through that first shock of being diagnosed with cancer.

It tells you who’s available and what services are there for you. In Alberta every year, there are 16,000 people who are diagnosed with cancer and so with the opportunity to win this grant of $50,000, it would pay for those kits for a full year.

The benefit is twofold. It allows more money to spent on fighting and beating cancer and through my role as a spokesperson for the Canadian Cancer Society the last number of years, I’ve met so many people who have told me what a difference that kit has made for them. They feel a little bit lost and they wonder where they go from there. Obviously, being diagnosed with cancer is a shock and does make you wonder about what’s next. That’s what those kits are there for.

It’s beneficial for the caregivers, too, because they often have a helpless feeling. It’s a really useful thing that will make a difference in so many people’s lives. So I’m hoping people jump on board and really back us and support us.

The challenge isn’t for me to win, everybody else wins. I’m always about when you give to cancer, it’s not a selfless act it’s a selfish act because you get it back at some point. If we all jump on board and we as Albertans win this thing, it’s going to help so many people.

It’s pretty neat what Pepsi’s doing, I’m proud to be a part of this thing and I’m encouraging fans to log on and vote.
