Harrison: I’m enjoying Calgary

I’ve been here for about five months now and I really have gotten comfortable. I’m enjoying Calgary thoroughly — not only the football team, but the city as well.

I’m really enjoying myself being out here. I’ve got great teammates, I’ve got great coaches and I’m enjoying every day. I really am.

With this season and my time in the NFL on Kansas City’s practice roster, I’ve learned what it means to be a professional football player. To be a professional in any sport, you have to learn how to come to work every day.

It’s not college, where you have a day off if you’re not really feeling up to it. When you’re a professional, this is your job. Most of these men out here are supporting their families, so you have to be ready to come to work every day no matter what’s going on in your personal life, your other side Harrison_100923.jpgbusinesses or what have you. That’s what I learned the most from the NFL.

After having started my professional career on a practice roster, it’s nice to be out there playing this season and making an impact on wins and losses. I’ll tell you, we had a rough year during my rookie year in Kansas City — we only won two games and it’s really tough because you really have no control over what goes on in the games. You’re not playing, you’re not even dressing.

All you can do is get the guys ready each week in practice, to give them the best possible look that you can so that they can go out and win football games. But it’s really frustrating when you don’t feel you can have any real impact on wins and losses. That’s why it’s been so enjoyable this season.

With our offensive line, we have a really great unit. We really do. It’s amazing how quickly we gelled as a unit, even going back to camp. Even though we were competing against each other, we still tried to help each other and bring each other along. We tried to bring out the best in each other through our play. It truly is amazing that the right guys with the right attitude can do some really impressive things.

The other thing is that we have great veterans in Rob and Dan and Ben Archibald who have just been amazing in bringing guys along and helping with the transition. They’ve done whatever they could to make the transition as soon as possible.

It looks like it’s going to warm up here for a few days but now that fall is here, the weather is going to get colder. Even though I’m from Texas, I’m ready for it. What’s funny is that my mother has just put in the mail some sweats and some long-johns for me, so I should be getting those soon. Besides, I went to college at Colorado, so I’ve had plenty of cold-weather years and I’ll be just fine.
