Chevrier: Milestone snuck up on me

I didn’t realize this until it was pointed out to me but this is going to be my 100th game with the Stampeders coming up on Friday.

That’s kind of neat that I’ve been here as long as that, especially after having spent some time in the NFL, NFL Europe and with another CFL team before I ever got to Calgary. I bounced around and never got the chance to make a home until I got here.Chevrier_100916.jpg

It’s been a great ride. I’ve seen a lot and been able to do a lot. I’ve had the most amazing teammates from the start to now. I’ve been able to play with some of the most exciting players in the game — Henry, Joff, Nik and some of the past guys like Cope. It’s been neat.

It’s funny because when I’m doing my job and playing the games, I’m concentrating so much on what I have to do that I don’t get a chance to enjoy it as much, so I never would have thought I would have been with the Stamps for 100 games.

For a guy in my position, I don’t have a lot of stats I can look at. It just comes down to the fact that when I snap the ball, it gets to where it’s supposed to be. I’ve worked with some great guys.

Working with Burke, our punter, he’s a great athlete and he can catch the ball. There has been a few times where maybe he made a catch on a snap that a bit out of his comfort zone — or out of my comfort zone — and he bailed me out.

And between Arjei and Brett Ralph as holders, we make each other look good and we make our kickers look good. My goal as a snapper is to remain under the radar because if they know your name as a snapper, chances are you’ve done a bad job.

The other thing is I try and stay healthy and I try and be reliable for the team so that they don’t have to worry about whether I’ll be there for a game. I think I’ve done a decent job of staying healthy and playing through some stuff that maybe some people wouldn’t play through.

Playing for the Stampeders for as long as I have has been an honour and a privilege and I hope to play for a lot longer.

My milestone 100th game is coming at Mosaic Stadium, which is a great venue. Obviously, it’s their fans that make the venue. Rider Nation has really taken off since I’ve been in the league in 2002. It’s a great atmosphere and I love playing there.

There a few places I really like playing on the road — Saskatchewan is one and Montreal is the other. They’re fun places to play.

That’s all for now. Make sure to catch the Chevy and Nasty Show on the FAN960 on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. with myself and former Stampeders defensive lineman Sheldon Napastuk.
