Stamps win on record-breaking night

The Calgary Stampeders extended their winning streak to seven games and completed a sweep of the season series against their provincial rivals with a 36-20 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday.

Calgary’s Joffrey Reynolds became the all-time leading rusher in Stampeders history in the second quarter as his 17-yard carry pushed him past Kelvin Anderson, who ended his Calgary career with 8,292 yards.Inset_100910.jpg

“I feel very good about it,” said Reynolds, who needed 51 yards going into the night and wound up with 145. “First of all, the offensive line played well. They got on guys and allowed me to get upfield.”

Henry Burris threw two touchdown passes and rushed for two other scores as the Stampeders improved their CFL-best record to 9-1. Calgary won all three meetings with the Eskimos this season.

Calgary led 19-17 at halftime after a back-and-forth opening 30 minutes.

The Stamps got on the board first as Rob Maver booted a 23-yard field goal. Edmonton took a 7-3 lead thanks to an 84-yard interception return by Chris Thompson.

In the second quarter, the Stamps went back ahead on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Burris to Rob Cote.

Then it was the Eskimos’ turn to get in the end-zone and Edmonton did so thanks to a 69-yard catch-and-run completion from Ricky Ray to Marko Mitchell.

After Edmonton punter Noel Prefontaine conceded a safety, the Stamps went ahead 19-14 thanks to Burris’ eight-yard touchdown scamper.

Prefontaine cut the lead to two points on the final play of the opening half with a 57-yard field goal.

Calgary padded their lead with 16 unanswered points in the third quarter. Burris picked up his second rushing touchdown on a three-yard run and his second throwing score on a six-yard connection with Nik Lewis.

In between, Juwan Simpson sacked Ray in the end-zone for a safety.

A 36-yard Prefontaine field goal and a Burke Dales punt single rounded out the scoring.

Calgary’s Brandon Smith picked off two Edmonton passes for the second consecutive game.

The Stamps return to action on Friday, Sept. 17 as they make the trip to Regina for a date with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
