Smith: Nice to get that first pick

That was my first interception in the CFL, so it’s a big thing. It’s been a long time coming. I had quite a few close calls but they never seemed to take the bounces to my hands. Today I was fortunate enough to get it to my hands and to get into the end-zone also, so it was my first interception and first touchdown also, always a good thing.

I got a good bounce on that interception but any time you can get an interception, it’s always a good thing. It took a lucky bounce and you know, I’ll take lucky bounces. But I thought it was pretty good coverage on the play, and I was able to get the ball out and prevent him from catching the ball. That was the first priority, but it took a good bounce, and I was able to pull it out, and take it towards the end-zone.SmithBL_100906.jpg

I knew I had a chance to go all the way because once he ran the route there wasn’t any other receivers in the area. I think it was the fullback that took a good angle, but I had my teammates escorting me into the end-zone, so I just followed their lead, made a cut, and just kept going.

I finished it off by diving into the end-zone. That’s always a big thing, to just dive into the end zone. One of the reasons is that I was super-tired. But just being able to dive into the end-zone is always a good celebration for me. It’s not doing too much, but it’s a good way to top it off.

The nice thing is I was able to get a second interception later in the game. They say once you get the first one, they start coming. You get the first one out of the way, and it’s like a chain effect, they just keep coming after that. So I look forward to getting more and more as the season progresses.

We just play hard as a defence as a team tonight. We put in a lot of work, whether it’s film sessions, or hanging out with each other, just talking about football . . . we love playing with each other. We have a great coaching staff who push us hard and we push ourselves hard also. We hold each other accountable for everything we do.

We strive to be the best — that’s what we want to be. That’s the goal we came into the season with, to be the best defensively and we’re doing whatever it takes to get there. If it calls for extra work, we’re always for it. We stick together, we have each other’s back all the time.
