Browner: Focused on the “W”

Some people have been making a deal about some of the things that happened between us and the Eskimos but that isn’t anything we’ve been thinking about. We’re thinking about a “W” and that’s it, that’s all.

People got fined for what happened in that game and we’re not looking to catch any more fines. We’ve got one goal at the end of the year and that’s to get to the Grey Cup.Browner_100905.jpg

The Labour Day Classic is a big game. It’s a big weekend across the CFL. You always want to win the game but there’s an extra incentive to beat your rivals.

It’s like the Civil War in U.S. college, which is the rivalry game between the Oregon Ducks and the team I played for, the Oregon State Beavers. It’s been going for over 100 and some years. What stands out about that rivalry is how long it’s been played and how much history there is behind it. It’s one of the oldest rivalries in college football.

As for tomorrow’s game, the Eskimos present a challenge for a defence. You’ve got Ricky Ray who can read defences and make throws and then you’ve got a guy like Zabransky who’s a mobile quarterback and that always presents a challenge for any defence in the CFL.

It’s interesting to see that as a team, we rank at the top of so many defensive categories but we haven’t had one of our players named defensive player of the week this season.

It’s a reflection of how good we are as a defence — you’re not having just one guy standing out. We’re not having guys who have 10 tackles because you have so much team speed out there — speed at the middle, at the Will, at the Sam, everywhere — that the plays are getting spread around and no one guy winds up with a lot of stats. I think it’s better for the team this way.
