I just can’t wait to play another Labour Day Classic. I’ve been on Edmonton’s side and now I get the chance to play for Calgary.
There’s no better place to play than Alberta and, as a Stampeder, I’m so thrilled with how the season is going and how the team has brought me in and really opened its arms to me as a player.
Coming into Labour Day, it’s the exact same amount of intensity for me. The colours don’t matter. This is my team and that’s the opposing team. There are a lot of people who are going to be watching and it’s going to be a violent, physical, emotional game. It always is. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.
There’s been quite a few intense games in the past. There’s always something going on. I’ve seen helmets hitting refs accidentally. All the rules change after Labour Day games because they see what happens in those games and say “We have to implement this rule for people’s safety.” It’s a crazy game.
People always say the season starts at Labour Day. I don’t know about that but what I do see is that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. We’ve built a good foundation for a great team here but it’s like I’ve said over and over — the work’s not done.
It’s still about: Did I get better today? Will I get better tomorrow? Will I get better the next day? Will the unit get better the next day? Will the team come together more and be a better team?
Things may come up, whether it’s the media trying to separate the team or a tough loss . . . things are going to happen during the season. Your focus has to be on continuing to improve and coming together so that you’re the best team at the end of the year.
You’re only as good as your last game, as a player and as a team. This team will be remembered by the last game we play. Of course, we all have some ideas of where that last game is going to be — in Edmonton on Nov. 28 — and that’s our goal.
