On that recovery of the BC fumble after the missed field goal at the start of Friday’s game in Vancouver, all I can say is that every once in a while, every old, blind dog finds a bone. That’s pretty much what happened on that play.
I was covering on a field goal, like they teach us to do every time. What’s funny is that I looked to my left because I thought I was going to get smoked by one of their guys and when I saw he wasn’t coming, I put my eyes back on the returner and the ball was right in front of me and I just jumped on it.
It was a real timely play a d I was very blessed to have the opportunity to put our team in a good position and after that, Hank ran it in for the six points, so it was good. I’ve been wanting to make a big contribution to the team. Obviously, I snap and that’s an unsung and unknown job unless I mess up so the fact I was able to pick up that ball was neat.
That’s the thing about football — you have to be ready anytime because there’s always a chance for a big play. There’s always a chance for an opportunity to make something happen. That’s the unpredictability of our sport. So if you dedicate yourself to being ready at all times, you’ll have chance to make a play when it presents itself.
You know what? Friday was a really weird game. A lot of stuff happened and things were going back and forth. The last three minutes were strange, too. It seemed like it took forever and the stands got emptier and emptier and it felt like we were playing in front of nobody.
At the three-minute mark, I was like, “OK, we’ve got to end this thing,” but they were still able to make two scores in the last three minutes, which was kind of weird.
We definitely left a lot on the field. Even though the score was massively in our favour until the very end, there was a lot of stuff we could have done a lot better.
Obviously, we’re happy with our record but we’re not necessarily happy with our play. As I mentioned, we left a lot on the field and made a lot of mistakes.
When you have a 7-1 record, you can think you could rest on your laurels but I think it’s pretty evident we didn’t play our best so we realize we still have a lot of preparation and a lot of work to do before we face Edmonton on Labour Day. We know they’re going to be better.
When you’re playing teams that are going to be throwing everything at you emotionally, you better be prepared for that. That was BC on Friday and that’s going to be Edmonton on Labour Day.
