McCune: Enjoying life in Calgary

It’s been an adjustment this season in my first CFL season. I’m playing a new position and that’s different.

The whole thing has been standing by my coach and listening to him and continuing to play the game. I know I can play. Play fast and aggressive — that’s what he always keeps telling me. Play fast and aggressive. So that’s what I keep doing.McCune_100820.jpg

For me going from middle linebacker to rush end, it’s been an adjustment. At middle linebacker, you have time to react to things but playing on the D-line, things happen a little quicker and it’s been an adjustment. But each game, I just continue to get better and better, just from seeing it and continuing to talk to my coaches during the game. And the rest of the D-line has been helping me out, so it’s a team effort.

I’m just taking it game by game and just continue to come to practice focused and into the meeting room focused and keep communicating with the D-linemen and keep getting better and better each week.

As for the defence as a whole, there’s always room for improvement. Even in the game against Edmonton, people from the outside looking in may think we’re playing great but we set high standards for ourselves and we come down hard on ourselves and we want to continue to get better.

It helps the defence when our offence is going well, too. They did a great job the other night against Edmonton and Coach Huff had a great game plan. We’re playing great as a team. Sometimes, it’s the offence that starts slow and the defence makes plays and sometimes it’s the defence that starts slow and the offence that makes plays to get things going. Or maybe it’s the special teams that comes in and makes a great tackle to give a spark to both the offence and the defence. I think that, as a whole, we’ve just played great football.

Along with on the football, it’s been great here in Calgary. I’ve been around the world in the military and I’ve been in situations where I’ve been confined in areas no bigger than a locker-room. Calgary has been great. I’m still learning my way around and the people here have been great, the coaches have been great, my teammates have been great and I’ve been enjoying it here.

And the fans? It’s always great to have those fans behind you when you’re playing at home. I’d just like to thank the fans for coming out and supporting us and I’d ask them to just coming out and supporting us and we’ll keep trying to play great football for them.
