Comiskey: It’s been nothing but fun

We’re six games into my first season with the Stampeders and you know what? In terms of the team aspect of it, it’s been nothing but fun since the beginning of the year and obviously, things are going well for us in terms of outcomes.

We still need to improve. We’re working every day to improve — that’s always going to be the case in football. But the bottom line is that I’m enjoying myself and that we’re coming along as a unit.Comiskey_100812.jpg

Being out of football for a year, I forgot how much I love practice. I really enjoy the process of getting better and the process of dedicating my time to trying to be as close to perfect as you can be out there. That, to me, is fun.

Obviously, the guys in the locker-room are a big part of it but the other thing that’s big for me is that goal, the one goal at the end of the year that everybody has and that everybody is serious about. You don’t get a lot of places in life where you have 50 or 60 guys together all working for one thing as visibly as you do in football. It’s a lot of fun.

Of course, I’ve heard countless old-man jokes from the other guys in the locker-room, but my whole thing is that I’ve earned every one of these grey hairs. If they can stick out until they’re 38, I’ll be proud of them.

Our next game is at home Sunday against my old team, Edmonton. No. 1, I think they’re a far better team than their record shows. I know those guys. I know how hard they play. I have nothing but respect for guys like Dario Romero. I think it’s going to be a helluva battle and nobody is underestimating what that team can do because they’re not a 1-5 team. You don’t have to tell us that and nobody has to tell me that especially. I played against those guys in practice and I know those guys. It’s going to be a fight and this is one we obviously want to win.

After Sunday’s game, the bye week for me is going to be a chance to go back and reload and see my family — my kids and my wife — and that’s huge for me. That’s the biggest thing — I think it’s going to be beneficial for me to be able to recharge my batteries and reset.

In saying that, you have to make sure you get your workouts in and you have to make sure you don’t lose track of what’s important in terms of what our goals are. You can’t lose focus because you only have one day when the team reports back to work and we have to start getting ready for the next game.
