Lysack: Proud to work with Cancer Society

When it comes to the Stampeders working with the Canadian Cancer Society, we started off doing the PinkPower initiative and we’ve been extremely successful with it. I’m really proud of the organization and the community for jumping on board with it.

Then from there, we’ve grown into Lysack’s Corner. The general idea of it was that it was an opportunity for families who are going through cancer to temporarily get away from the whole Lysack_100806.jpgworld of cancer and being in a hospital. The idea was that when they were together as a family, they were dealing with cancer and the treatments. So it was a chance to get away from that and just enjoy a game, something a lot of us take for granted. They’re enjoying Stampeders football and sitting in the stands having a good time and being a family and just getting away from that whole other situation.

It’s grown to the point where we’re now partnering with the Kids Cancer Care Foundation. We’ve got a lot of young kids who are going through it. And it’s not just the cancer patients themselves but also the parents and the siblings who have to deal with cancer, so this gives them a chance to enjoy themselves as well.

It’s something I’m pretty proud of, the way we’ve all jumped on board and we’ve gotten a really good response from the families who have taken part so far. So we’re continuing to do that and we hope that everyone who will be going will enjoy it.

PinkPower kind of spring-boarded my involvement with the Canadian Cancer Society and I’ve gradually taken on a bigger and bigger role every year, both by my choice and theirs. I have no problem doing that. I’m a spokesperson for them and I got to various events that they do. I speak and do whatever I can to help out because it’s a deadly disease that is a little bit daunting for people. We’re trying to do whatever we can — every little bit makes a difference.

It is a year-round thing for me. If I could give 365 days, I would. It’s near and dear to my heart and it should be to everybody else because at some point in your life, cancer is going to affect you, whether it’s directly or indirectly, multiple times.

It’s something that greatly affects our society and while it’s daunting, it’s not too daunting. We can do something about it. The Canadian Cancer Society has done an amazing job and they’ve made huge strides. We just want to continue so that they can keep on doing their amazing work.
