Against Winnipeg, we’re facing a second-string quarterback in Steven Jyles because Buck Pierce is injured. That’s a challenge because if you back and look at our record, we haven’t been very good playing against second-string quarterbacks. If you look at our recent history, it’s been bad.
So that’s basically our focus this week — don’t underestimate their backup quarterback. Just go out there and execute our game plan as if he was the starter from Day 1.
Maybe sometimes when it’s not the No. 1 quarterback, you try to do a little bit extra and try to get an extra pick here and there. But you really can’t do that because when you try to do that, that’s how you get hurt.
As for the entire Winnipeg offence, they have a nice little corps over there. The receivers are a veteran group and they just added a new guy, 14 (Terence Jeffers-Harris) and he’s a pretty good player himself. With him being added to 12 (Adarius Bowman) and 82 (Terrence Edwards), it should be a nice little combo over there. And Reid in the backfield? Everybody knows about him. We have our hands full this week. It’s going to be a tough game, we know that. We’re going to have to battle all the way for 60 minutes.
On our side, I’ve been impressed with the young players in our secondary, starting in training camp and going all the way up to now. The young guys? That’s why they’re here. The coaches have seen what they can do and believe in their talent. The veteran players have faith in them, too. They come ask questions and they come in early to watch tape and that sort of thing. And the play hard — 100 miles an hour. That’s all we can expect from them is to play hard and execute the game plan that the coaches put out there for them.
Our defence has done OK so far this season, but we know we can still be better. It’s still early in the season. We’ve only played four games and there are a lot more games to go. You can’t get comfortable with just three wins. You still need about 10 more wins to get into the playoffs. Every week, there’s always something to sharpen up on. There are always mistakes to correct. There ain’t nobody that’s perfect.
The coach has been stressing to us that we have to come out with the same intensity this week that we had in last week’s game against Saskatchewan. We have to try and execute the game plan the same way, to play fast and aggressive.
