Calgary Stampeders first-round draft pick Rob Maver has been invited for a visit by the Atlanta Falcons this weekend.
Maver, a kicker, was selected fifth overall by the Stamps in last Sunday’s CFL Canadian Draft.
“Rob played at University of Guelph and the Falcons’ GM — Tom Dimitroff — played football at the same school, so Tom is offering Rob the opportunity to go kick for them this coming weekend,” said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “I’m sure it will be a good experience for Rob, but this doesn’t change the fact that we’re continuing to move ahead with contract negotiations and we expect him to be here for training camp.”
Maver was an Ontario University Athletics all-star as both a kicker and a punter in 2009. He led the OUA with a 92.9 per cent field-goal percentage and was also tops in the conference with a 41.3-yard punt average.
“This trip to Atlanta is kind of an alumni thing,” said Maver. “Make no mistake, I want to be a Stampeder and I’m going to be a Stampeder. I was so excited when Coach (Mark) Kilam called me on Sunday that I was just speechless.”
