
Pick-by-pick: Stampeders 2010 draft
(First round, fifth overall)
K/P Rob Maver, Guelph
The coaches say: “Rob Maver is the most polished kicker in the draft and the best prospect that can do all three kickings jobs (place-kicking, kickoffs, punting) to come out over the last several years,” said Stampeders special teams coordinator Mark Kilam.
Notes: The Brampton, Ont., product was an Ontario University Athletics all-star as both a kicker and a punter in 2009 . . . Maver was tops in the OUA with a 92.9 per cent field-goal percentage (13 successful kicks on 14 tries) and was also tops in the conference with a 41.3-yard punt average . . . He was the only kicker invited to the CFL’s evaluation camp and he bench-pressed 225 lbs. 11 times and completed the 40-yard dash in 4.97 seconds . . . Has worked with Gary Zauner, a former NFL special teams coach has now works as an advisor and has worked with such kickers and special-teams players as Jon Ryan, Eddie Murray and ex-Stamp Pat McDonald.

DB Taurean Allen, Wilfrid Laurier
The coaches say: “Allen has the talent to be a starter in the CFL,” said Stampeders defensive coordinator Chris Jones. “He has tremendous confidence and poise.”
Notes: Played cornerback for the Golden Hawks . . . Allen was a three-time all-star in Ontario University Athletics as he was honoured in 2007, 2008 and 2009 . . . Recorded 16.5 tackles, two knockdowns and one interception during the 2009 season . . . Was invited to play in the 2009 East-West Bowl . . . Graduate of Applewood Heights Secondary School in Mississauga, Ont.
(Third round, 17th overall)
OL John Bender, Nevada
The coaches say: “Plays with excellent base and balance,” said offensive line coach Kris Sweet.
Notes: Born in Three Hills, Alta., and attended high school in Cochrane . . . Stands six-foot-eight and weighs 325 lbs. . . . Part of a Nevada offensive line that paved the way for three 1,000-yard rushers in 2009 . . . Nevada led the nation in 2009 with 7.6 yards per carry . . . In 2008, the Nevada offensive line helped the Wolf Pack finish second in the nation in rushing offence . . . Bender has one year of college eligibility remaining at Nevada.

OL J’Michael Deane, Michigan State
The coaches say: “He has a very good future. He is very strong and moves well,” said offensive line coach Kris Sweet.
Notes: Deane is a native of Toronto . . . He is six-foot-five and weighs 312 pounds . . . Asa a junior in 2009, he saw action in three games and made one start at right guard against Central Michigan . . . Originally recruited as a defensive player by the Spartans, he switched from nose tackles to the offensive line in 2007 . . . Played for the Metro Toronto Wildcats in the Ontario Varsity Football League and earned all-star honours in 2005 . . . Deane was a four-year starter at Newtonbrook Secondary School in North York, Ont.
(Fifth round, 37th overall)
LB Karl McCartney, Saint Mary’s
The coaches say: “Karl is very athletic and explosive,” said Stampeders defensive coordinator Chris Jones. “He has the physical tools to either play linebacker, defensive end and special teams.”
Notes: Recorded 3.5 sacks, five tackles for loss and one forced fumble for the Saint Mary’s Huskies in 2009 . . . Transferred to Saint Mary’s from Wilfrid Laurier . . . In 2008, he blocked a punt and ran it back 60 yards for touchdown to lead Saint Mary’s to a comeback win over St. Francis Xavier . . . Recorded 21 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 2008.

OL Oamo Culbreath, UBC
The coaches say: “He’s a big man and an excellent prospect with lots of room to grow,” said head coach and general manager John Hufnagel.
Notes: Culbreath is a product of Kingston, Ont. . . . He’s six-foot-five, 300 lbs. . . . Played guard for the Thunderbirds and has been a starter for the past three years.
