Insider: 100 days and counting

If you sneak a peek at a CFL-related messageboard these days or eavesdrop at a water-cooler meeting of football fans, the anxiety is palpable and the football-fever withdrawal symptoms are obvious.

Well take heart, all you diehards. The off-season is almost over and as of today — Tuesday, March 23 — there are exactly 100 days remaining until the Stampeders kick off the 2010 campaign by entertaining the Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium on July 1.

To tide you over until then, there’s plenty happening to help warm you up for opening night.

• The Stampeders hold their final open-tryout camp of the off-season in Winter Springs, Fla., on Saturday, Mar. 27.

• The final audition for the 2010 Stampeders Outriders happens on Mar. 28 with a big event at Flames Central.

• The 20th edition of It’s a Snap — the Stamps’ annual ladies-only football seminar — is on tap for Wednesday, Apr. 14. This is the evening when Stampeders coaches and players give women an inside look into the sport.

• The President’s Luncheon is slated for Thursday, May 6 at Flames Central. Quarterback Henry Burris will again be honoured as the recipient of the Presidents’ Ring, the first player to receive that award three years in succession.

• The fifth annual Henry Burris All-Star Weekend runs on May 14 and 15. The event features a golf outing at Springbank Links Golf Club, a football camp fir kids aged 8 to 18 and a gala evening reception. The whole weekend supports the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Calgary and Area.

Fanfest_100319.jpgThe always popular Fanfest event will be held Saturday, May 29 at McMahon Stadium. The annual gathering serves as the unofficial launch for the new season. The day starts with a pancake breakfast and then fans have the opportunity to get their photo taken with ‘Quick Six’ the Stampeders Touchdown Horse, to meet the Outriders, to participate with players in activities on McMahon’s Field Turf, to ask a Stampeders coach questions about the upcoming season and to get an autograph or two.

• Before facing the Argonauts in the season-opener, Calgary will prepare for the 2010 season with a couple of pre-season games. On Sunday, June 13, the Stamps head north to Edmonton to face the Eskimos. A week later on June 20, Calgary will play host to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
