Insider: Black Attack does it again

Clothes make the man. Or is it the other way around?

Either way, much like the great Johnny Cash, the Calgary Stampeders simply have a great aura about them when they’re sporting black.Lewis_091116.jpg

Sunday’s West Semi-Final victory over the Edmonton Eskimos continues a tradition of success for the Stamps when wearing dark tops. Naturally, the players in the uniforms have a lot more to do with the results than the colour of the garments but still, it’s fun to look back at the Stamps’ record when they’re the doing the Men in Black routine.

For example, the black-clad Stamps are now 5-1 all-time in post-season action, including 2-0 in the semi-final round. (And if you really want to stretch a point, Calgary is now 3-0 when wearing black for a playoff contest played on Nov. 15)

The only playoff setback for the Black Attack came against Edmonton in the 2000 West Final.

Otherwise, Calgary has prevailed in the 1998 West Final against the Eskimos, the 1998 Grey Cup against Hamilton, the 1999 West Semi-Final against Edmonton, the 2008 West Final against BC and in the most recent contest against the Esks.

The playoff history:

Black Attack
Season Game Date Opponents Result
1998 West final Nov. 15 Edmonton 33-10 W
1998 Grey Cup Nov. 22 Hamilton 26-24 W
1999 West semi Nov. 14 Edmonton 30-17 W
2000 West final Nov. 19 Edmonton 37-23 L
2008 West final Nov. 15 BC 22-18 W
2009 West semi Nov. 15 Edmonton 24-21 W

Calgary has done pretty well in the regular season with the black jerseys, posting an 11-4 mark that includes an active four-game winning streak. Combined, the Stamps are 16-5 when wearing black, which computes to a 76.2 per cent success rate.
