Insider: Hank catching Flutie

The Calgary Stampeders have been blessed with many wonderful quarterbacks over the years. From Keith Spaith to Jerry Keeling to Peter Liske to Danny Barrett to Jeff Garcia to Dave 090816burris.jpgDickenson, the position has been manned by some very talented arms over the 61 years of the franchise’s existence.

But in every statistical category that matters, the names at the top of the list are Doug Flutie and Henry Burris. Heading into the 2009 season, Flutie held down top spot in those categories but Burris has just passed the six-time CFL Most Outstanding Player in passing yards and is bearing in on Flutie in the other categories, too.

Burris became the Stamps’ all-time leader in passing yards during the Aug. 13 game against the Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium. The 34-year-old quarterback from Spiro, Okla., overtook Flutie with a 13-yard completion to Brett Ralph with a little more than a minute remaining in the second quarter.090813flutie.jpg

With a total of 479 yards on the night, Burris now stands at 20,792 yards during his Stampeders career. Flutie passed for 20,551 yards when he wore the Red and White from 1992 to 1995.

What’s amazing is that both men accumulated passing stats in the exact same number of games. While Burris has dressed for 99 contests as a member of the Stampeders and Flutie for 65, they actually appeared in and threw a pass in 64 games apiece. That’s because Burris served two entire seasons as a No. 3 quarterback during which he always watched the action from the sidelines and never took the field.

Here are the games, pass attempts and completions Burris needed to surpass the all-time yardage record compared to Flutie’s totals with Calgary.

Category Burris Flutie
Games played* 64 64
Games dressed** 99 65
Pass attempts 2,324 2,382
Completions 1,399 1,438

* Games in which the players played and accumulated passing statistics
** Games in which the players appeared on the active roster

Burris is also very close to Flutie in several other passing categories:

  • Burris has made 2,340 pass attempts for Calgary, 42 shy of Flutie’s all-time best mark of 2,382
  • He has 1,427 completions, just 11 fewer than Flutie’s record of 1,438
  • With three touchdown throws against the Eskimos, Burris now has 134 scoring passes as a Stampeder. Flutie, with 140, still holds the record

Burris has an excellent chance to claim another of the all-time franchise records when the Stampeders return to action on Aug. 28 with a visit to the Toronto Argonauts.

In addition, on July 17 of this season, Burris surpassed Garcia to become the Stamps’ all-time leader in rushing yards among quarterbacks.
