More than 1,000 fans were in attendance on Sunday at McMahon Stadium for the annual BBQ and Mock Game.
The event featured a series of game situations with a 20-second clock and CFL officials keeping an eye on proceedings. Admission was free and fans had the opportunity to purchase a hot dog-chips-soft drink combo for $5.
On hand at the entrance gates to greet fans this year was general manager John Hufnagel along with new Game Day Ambassador Jon Cornish and Stamps alums Juwan Simpson and Jeremaine Copeland, who are serving as guest coaches at training camp.
Both sides of the ball had a chance to shine as veteran defensive back Brandon Smith had an interception return for touchdown. Meanwhile, Joe West made a spectacular one-handed catch and Kamar Jorden had a pair of touchdown receptions.
“It’s a dress rehearsal for us as coaches, too,” said defensive coordinator DeVone Claybrooks. “It gives us a chance to iron out any kinks in our systems and how we do things. It’s kind of a good thing for everybody.”
Next up at McMahon Stadium is Saturday’s pre-season opener against the Edmonton Eskimos. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Quotable
Receiver Kamar Jorden, one of the standouts in Sunday’s mock game: “We’ve been going fast in practice but there’s nothing like that game speed and it kind of woke people up to that today.”
