Here’s a closer look at the Red and White’s 35-23 victory over the BC Lions on Friday at McMahon Stadium.
It’s a modest accomplishment, to be sure, but nevertheless a noteworthy baby step to hopefully bigger and better things.
With Friday’s victory, the Stamps are assured of finishing ahead of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Division and will thus avoid a last-place finish for an 11th straight year.
Calgary hasn’t finished in the West cellar since 2004 when the Stamps were 4-14. Since that time, every other CFL team except Montreal has been a last-place team in its division and the Alouettes will have to catch and pass someone this season to avoid joining that group.
At 9-3, the Stamps also assured themselves of finishing at or above .500 for an eighth straight season. The Lions, who carried a string of four consecutive .500-or-better finishes into this season, have the second-longest active streak and BC will have to win five its final seven games to keep that streak going.
With a six-catch, 115-yard performance against BC, Stamps slotback Eric Rogers became the first CFLer this season to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in receiving.
It was Rogers’ fifth 100-yard game of the season and he becomes the first Stamp to crack the 1,000-yard milestone after 12 games since Ken-Yon Rambo in 2008.
Rogers is on pace for 1,566 receiving yards, which would be the highest total by a Stamp since Dave Sapunjis had 1,655 yards in 1995.
John Hufnagel’s career coaching record now stands at 97-40-1 and he is inching closer to the all-time top 10 in coaching victories.
Huff is just two wins back of Cal Murphy, his former coach in Winnipeg, for 10th all time and he needs three victories to reach 100.
With a .707 career winning percentage, Hufnagel ranks first among all coaches with at least 100 games on the sidelines.
Speaking of top 10, defensive back Keon Raymond cracked the Stamps’ all-time leaders in interceptions thanks to his two picks on Friday.
Raymond no has 24 career interceptions, tying him with Ray Odums (1977-84) for 10th place in franchise history.
