Max Caron is the type of linebacker who can do a little bit of everything on the defensive side of the ball.
After impressing scouts with his football smarts and instinctive play at Concordia, Caron was taken 16th overall by the Calgary Stampeders on Tuesday evening. He expressed his excitement about being drafted to a team regarded as a consistent contender.
“It’s a pretty awesome feeling,” said the Kingston, Ont., native. “The No. 1 thing I was saying to (head coach/general manager) John Hufnagel and (defensive coordinator) Rich Stubler is that I would love to go to a team that has a winning tradition in the CFL and get a great chance to learn from not only some of the top players in the league, but some of the top coaches.”
Standing at six-foot-two, 213 lbs., Caron won the President’s Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport in 2011, just his second season with the Stingers. He was a conference all-star in both 2011 and 2013.
Caron describes himself as a sideline-to-sideline linebacker who may not always make the biggest hit, but will be there to make the game-changing play when it counts.
“Over the course of my CIS career,” he said, “I was a guy who was going to make some big-momentum plays. I think I’m a player that shines in the bigger moments.”
Off the field, Max loves following sports, being outdoors, reading and hanging out with friends.
