Six Stamps named West all-stars

The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that six members of the team are 2011 CFL West Division all-stars.

Running back Jon Cornish, receiver Nik Lewis, guard Dimitri Tsoumpas, defensive back Keon Raymond, punter Burke Dales and returner Larry Taylor have been honoured as all-stars.Cornish_111105.jpg

Cornish, in his fifth season with the Stamps, carried the ball 119 times this season for 863 yards and nine touchdowns. His 7.3-yard average per carry was best in the CFL. Cornish also had 385 yards and two touchdowns on 26 receptions, giving him 1,248 yards from scrimmage. Cornish was named the CFL’s top Canadian in Weeks 14 and 16 and was top offensive player in Week 14.

Lewis, who is in his eighth season with the Stamps, finished third in the CFL in receiving with 1,209 yards and second with 89 receptions. The durable receiver appeared in each of Calgary’s 18 regular-season games. Lewis continued to add to his club record of consecutive games with at least one catch, a mark that stands at 140 games. Lewis’ fantastic season saw him move into the Top 25 when it comes to all-time receiving yards in the CFL. Lewis had three 100-yard receiving games in 2011.

Tsoumpas, in his fourth season with the Stamps, started the final 16 games of the season. He has been a key component of an offensive line that paved the way for Raymond_111012.jpgstrong rushing and passing attacks in 2011. The Stamps finished second in the league in rushing yards with 2,244 and average rushing yards per game with 124.7. Calgary was also second in the league in average gain per rush at 6.2 yards. Calgary was second in the league in passing yards (5,033) and average passing yards per game (279.6). With just 34 sacks allowed, the Stamps finished tied for second when it comes to protecting the quarterback.

Raymond, in his fourth season with the team, led the Stamps with five interceptions. His 237 interception return yards led the league and he also scored two touchdowns on interceptions, one coming on a memorable 117-yard return earlier this season against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina. That interception was a new club record for longest interception return in Stamps history.

Dales, in his seventh season with the Stamps, led the league with a punting average of 47.2 yards. Dales punted the ball 111 times for 5,243 yards, which included 11 singles and a season-long punt of 82 yards. The 47.2-yard average is the best in Dales’ career.

Taylor, in his first season with the Stamps, was a special-teams threat throughout the regular season. He finished fourth in the league in combined yards (1,984), a total made up of kickoff-return yards (1,008), punt-return yards (538) and missed-field-goal-return yards (232).

Taylor led the league in the latter category thanks in large part to his return of 122 yards for a touchdown against the BC Lions on Oct. 8. Taylor had three punt returns of more than 30 yards, four kickoff returns of more than 40 yards and three missed-field goal returns of more than 30 yards.
