The Calgary Stampeders and the Canadian Cancer Society are continuing their partnership for the 2010 Canadian Football League season in an ongoing effort to raise both funds and awareness in the battle against cancer.
Lysack’s Corner, which was launched in 2009, is a block of seats dedicated to people fighting cancer and their caregivers. Created by Stampeder Wes Lysack, the goal of the program is to give those living with cancer a chance to relax and have some fun. Seats are available throughout the regular season at McMahon Stadium. Those who have been diagnosed with cancer or who are looking after a cancer patient are encouraged to call 1-800-661-2262 for tickets.
“Those living with cancer are obviously dealing with a very difficult experience,” said Lysack, the Stamps’ spokesperson for the Canadian Cancer Society. “It’s a fight that takes a tremendous amount of energy and perseverance. With Lysack’s Corner we’re trying to provide those afflicted a means to hopefully focus on something else.”
The Stampeders and Canadian Cancer Society also work together on the PinkPower initiative. Conceived in 2008 by Penny Hufnagel, wife of Stamps general manager/head coach John Hufnagel, the Pink Power campaign includes the sale of autographed pink hats and toques, and an auction of Stampeders memorabilia.
A total of $36,000 was raised through the 2009 program, with all proceeds going directly to the Canadian Cancer Society. The 2010 Pink Power game is Saturday, Sept. 25, against the BC Lions at McMahon Stadium.
